

Rience is driven out of hiding after Benjen, provoked into rage by the insults traded, and Ferryn arrives and lets loose his archers on the Owlclaw. The two of them exchange insults over their prowess and their apparent dishonour, until Benjen finally strikes gold in suggesting that he is about to marry Maria, whereas Elia will be left to rot in Winterfell after Rience has been properly killed. In the Wolfswood, Rience and Benjen engage in a game of cat and mouse, in which Rience hunts his brother with a bow and Benjen, armed with knives and a sword, manages to track him down.

He is rooted out of hiding when Benjen sets houses outside Winterfell on fire, and empties the outlaws into the Wolfswood, where a bloody battle begins. Rience, who has acquired allies in rogue Bolton soldiers recently. When Rience arrives outside Winterfell and sets up camp with Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne, he is eventually detected and Lord Roose Bolton sends out the Thalatrix brothers with a small number of men to kill him.

It was an attempted ambush by Lord Benjen Thalatrix against Lord Rience Thalatrix, his younger brother, whom he had presumed dead after the battle at Seagard. The Showdown in the Wolfswood was a brief, but bloody battle predating the Battle of Winterfell.
